What are you looking at?
There have been so many downsides to the last year and a half, but it’s been such an unexpected treasure to be able to see my children throughout the day. Especially my son, who is 20 months old. He was born in November 2019 — right before our world changed forever. Getting to witness his first steps, prepare his lunch each day, and catching him snuggling our aging pups when I pop upstairs from my home office to refresh my coffee is the fresh dose of perspective I need every day. Time is precious, no matter how difficult the circumstances that surround it.
I often work from our screened-in porch, which overlooks a park filled with all sorts of wildlife. Hummingbirds, deer, and the occasional wild turkey are part of my daily working landscape. Though my work may feel chaotic at times, it brings me a sense of calm listening to the birds sing (while drowning out the incessant clicking and mashing of keys on my laptop as I feverishly try to keep up with email.)
What are you listening to?
My kids have completely taken over my Spotify account with the Wiggles and Disney classics. I mean — I can ‘Let it Go’ with the best of them, but there’s only so much a human being can take. Before the house wakes each morning, I sit down with a steaming cup of coffee, turn on a little instrumental music in the background (Classical and Spanish guitar have been my go-to this week) while I read my daily devotion and mentally prepare for the day. It’s a little piece of peace, even if it only last 8 minutes. Time is precious.
